Gou Qi Zi (Goji Berry) – a classic TCM tonic that nourishes Liver and Kidney, enriches Blood, enhances immunity, and delays aging with abundant bioactive compounds.

HERBAL NAME: Gou Qi Zi – Fructus Lycii (Goji Berry)

Scientific Name (Pharmaceutical Name): Lycium barbarum L. (Lycii Fructus)

English Common Name: Goji Berry

Family: Solanaceae

Storage: Store in tightly closed containers in a dry place.

Taste and Nature: Bitter, cold in nature.

Therapeutic Actions (According to Traditional Chinese Medicine):

Gou Qi Zi nourishes Liver and Kidney Yin, enriches the Blood, brightens the eyes, moistens the Lung, generates body fluids, and tonifies Qi. Prolonged use strengthens tendons and bones, promotes agility, and delays aging.

Indicated for deficiency of Liver and Kidney Yin leading to dizziness, blurred vision, or diminished eyesight. Protects the Liver, prevents fat accumulation in hepatic tissue, and promotes regeneration of liver cells.

Used for tinnitus, hearing loss, and gum inflammation; helps strengthen teeth and promote regeneration. Tonifies Kidney and Qi, indicated for seminal emission, impotence, infertility, and sterility.

Also used in rheumatic conditions causing generalized pain, weakness of the lumbar and knees, and lumbago.

Helps reduce blood glucose in wasting-thirst disorders (diabetes), cough (either dry or with phlegm), and consumptive diseases (chronic deficiency involving Qi, Blood, Yin, and Yang).

Gou Qi Zi has the effects of moistening the Lung, generating body fluids, and gently promoting bowel movement. It is suitable for individuals with constipation caused by Blood deficiency, Yin deficiency, or insufficiency of body fluids.

Regulates lipid metabolism, lowers blood pressure, dilates blood vessels, slows atherosclerosis, and enhances hematopoiesis in the bone marrow.

Improves and regulates immune function, strengthens the activity of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal–gonadal axis (including the prostate), corresponding to tonifying Qi and Blood, harmonizing Yin and Yang, strengthening the Spleen, and tonifying the Kidney.

Exhibits antioxidant and anti-aging properties, resists radiation, and inhibits the proliferation of cancer cells.

Chemical Constituents:

  1. Polysaccharides (Lycium barbarum polysaccharides, LBPs): Main active components, accounting for about 5–8% of the dried fruit. Composed of complex sugar chains including arabinose, galactose, glucose, mannose, xylose, and rhamnose, forming the characteristic polysaccharide structure of Gou Qi Zi.
  2. Carotenoids: Contains primarily zeaxanthin and zeaxanthin dipalmitate, along with β-carotene, cryptoxanthin, and other carotenoid derivatives responsible for the fruit’s red-orange color.
  3. Polyphenols and Flavonoids: Includes phenolic and flavonoid compounds such as rutin, quercetin, kaempferol, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, and p-coumaric acid. Content varies by cultivation region and processing method.
  4. Alkaloids and Amides: Contains natural alkaloids such as lycibarbarines, lycibarbarspermidine, and derivatives of spermidine or spermine, found mainly in the fruit and root.
  5. Amino Acids, Organic Acids, and Fatty Acids: Contains over 18 amino acids including essential ones (lysine, leucine, arginine), organic acids such as citric, malic, and succinic acids, and fatty acids such as linoleic, oleic, palmitic, and stearic acids.
  6. Vitamins and Minerals: Rich in vitamins C, E, B1, B2, B6, and trace elements such as iron, zinc, copper, manganese, selenium, calcium, and magnesium.
  7. Sterols, Terpenoids, and Lignans: Includes β-sitosterol, campesterol, stigmasterol, and several natural terpenoids and lignans.
  8. General Nutritional Composition: Contains approximately 13% protein, 59% carbohydrates, 7% fiber, with small amounts of lipids and moisture — providing the nutritional foundation for its bioactive compounds.

Dosage and Administration:

8–20 grams per day. Can be used alone or combined with other herbal ingredients in decoction or prescription form.

Contraindications and Precautions:

Due to its rich and tonifying nature, use with caution in patients with Spleen and Stomach deficiency or chronic diarrhea. Overdosage may cause loose stools.
Contraindicated in cases of Spleen deficiency with damp accumulation or external excess heat pathogens.

ECOLOGICAL VALUE OF GOJI BERRY

Beyond its nutritional and therapeutic value, Goji Berry (Lycium barbarum L.) has distinctive ecological characteristics involving reproductive biology, seed dispersal, and dryland adaptation:

  • Cultivar-Dependent Pollination: Research has documented differences in self-compatibility among goji cultivars, with many requiring compatible pollen sources for successful fruit production.
  • Wildlife and Seed Dispersal: Its red fleshy berries may provide food for birds and other animals, contributing to seed dispersal.
  • Adaptation to Dry and Nutrient-Poor Soils: Goji can grow under relatively dry conditions and has been used in suitable sloping and degraded-land management systems.
  • Sustainable Cultivation: Orchard management should consider compatible cultivars, irrigation efficiency, and the prevention of unintended spread where invasion risks exist.

Goji Berry provides ecological functions associated with pollination, wildlife interactions, and adaptation to dry environments. These functions depend on cultivar characteristics, habitat conditions, and appropriate management.
