Sku: SKU-1040072025

Gardeniae Fructus (Zhi Zi – Cape Jasmine Fruit) is a classical Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herb renowned for its bitter-cold nature and powerful actions to clear heat, drain fire, eliminate irritability, promote urination, cool the blood, and calm the mind. Described in the Shennong Bencao Jing and Compendium of Materia Medica, Zhi Zi is praised as a superior remedy that “purges internal fire and soothes the Heart.” Modern pharmacological studies confirm that its bioactive compounds — geniposide, crocin, and genipin — possess anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, hepatoprotective, choleretic, antioxidant, and antitumor potentials. Clinically, it is used to treat febrile diseases, insomnia due to heat, jaundice, hepatitis, urinary tract infections, hemoptysis, skin inflammation, boils, and bleeding disorders caused by excess heat. The method of preparation determines its therapeutic direction: raw fruit clears heat, lightly stir-fried fruit drains fire, and charred fruit cools blood and stops bleeding. With its harmonizing nature that dispels pathogenic fire while protecting vital energy, Gardenia fruit exemplifies the wisdom of traditional Chinese medicine — balancing the body, calming the mind, and restoring internal peace.

THERAPEUTIC ACTIONS (TCM FUNCTIONS)

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, Zhi Zi clears heat and drains fire from the Heart, Lung, and Triple Burner; resolves damp-heat; cools the blood; stops bleeding; detoxifies; relieves irritability; promotes urination; and alleviates swelling and toxic syndromes.

1. Heart & Nervous System

  • Clears Heart fire, relieves irritability, calms the spirit; used for restlessness, insomnia, palpitations, and chest oppression following febrile diseases.
  • Commonly used in formulas such as Zhi Zi Chi Tang to reduce irritability, promote calm sleep, and ease chest discomfort.
  • Assists in calming children who are restless, irritable, or have difficulty sleeping due to febrile heat (under professional supervision).
  • Treats headache caused by phlegm-heat obstruction.
  • Modern studies show that crocetin and geniposide may improve sleep, mildly reduce blood pressure, protect neurons, and reduce oxidative stress.

2. Liver, Gallbladder & Digestive System

  • Clears damp-heat from the Liver and Gallbladder, indicated for jaundice, bitter taste in mouth, hypochondriac fullness, poor appetite, dry mouth, and oral ulcers.
  • Cools the blood and stops bleeding; used for hematemesis, epistaxis, and hematochezia (often in its charred form Zhi Zi Tan).
  • Promotes bowel movement in cases of constipation due to excess heat; assists in dysentery or diarrhea caused by damp-heat.
  • Modern research: Zhi Zi exhibits hepatoprotective, choleretic, and anti-ulcer effects; it lowers serum liver enzymes and reduces hepatic inflammation.

3. Urinary & Reproductive System

  • Promotes urination, clears damp-heat in the Lower Jiao; used for stranguria (painful, difficult urination), dark or bloody urine.
  • Applied in formulas for cystitis, urethritis, and mild nephritis due to damp-heat patterns.
  • Used internally or externally for swollen, painful testes or soft tissue inflammation after trauma.
  • Modern pharmacological studies show Zhi Zi increases diuresis, reduces uric acid, protects renal tissue, and suppresses inflammation in nephritis models.

4. Respiratory System & ENT

  • Clears Lung heat, cools the blood, relieves sore throat, dry cough, hemoptysis, epistaxis, and mouth ulcers.
  • Reduces fever and mild infection caused by damp-heat in the respiratory tract.
  • In TCM theory, Zhi Zi “purges fire from the Triple Burner,” relieving chest tightness, shortness of breath, and internal heat agitation.

5. Eyes, Skin, Muscles & Trauma

  • Clears Liver fire and reduces redness or pain of the eyes, conjunctivitis, and stye.
  • Taken orally or applied externally to reduce swelling, inflammation, carbuncles, erythema, ulcerated sores (due to internal heat or damp-heat), minor burns, and soft tissue injuries.
  • Demonstrated anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant effects that promote wound healing and reduce erythema.
  • Supports treatment of skin inflammation such as tinea (dermatomycosis) and rosacea (chronic sebaceous gland inflammation).

6. Immune, Anti-inflammatory & Antitumor Effects

  • In vitro studies show Zhi Zi inhibits bacterial growth (e.g., Shigella dysenteriae, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa), reduces inflammation, and has antipyretic and strong antioxidant properties.
  • Compounds geniposide, crocin, and genipin demonstrate inhibitory effects on the proliferation of cancer cells in liver, lung, gastric, and oral cancer (preclinical stage).
  • Zhi Zi is regarded as a medicinal herb with potential antitumor properties.

  • For clearing damp-heat in the Lower Jiao (painful urination, jaundice, urinary infection): remove the peel, use the pulp only, rinse off the yellow color, and lightly dry-fry (stir-fry until yellow) to direct the action downward and enhance diuretic effect.
  • For treating bleeding due to heat (epistaxis, hematemesis, hematochezia): char the fruit (Zhi Zi Tan) to enhance blood-cooling and hemostatic actions while reducing cold nature.
  • Raw (unprocessed): clears heat and resolves fever.
  • Lightly dry-fried (yellow): purges fire and alleviates irritability.
  • Charred (black): stops bleeding.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

Contraindicated in individuals with Spleen–Stomach deficiency cold, chronic diarrhea, or without internal heat or damp-heat accumulation.

ECOLOGICAL VALUE OF CAPE JASMINE

Beyond its therapeutic value, Cape Jasmine (Gardenia jasminoides J.Ellis) has ecological functions associated with fragrant flowers, fleshy fruits, and evergreen shrub habitats:

  • Pollinator Attraction: Its large, fragrant white flowers attract bees and other flower-visiting insects.
  • Food Resources for Wildlife: Its orange-yellow fruits may provide food for birds and other animals, potentially facilitating seed dispersal.
  • Evergreen Shrub Habitat: Dense foliage maintains year-round vegetation cover and provides shelter for small organisms in suitable habitats.
  • Ecological Considerations: Complete fruit harvesting reduces the fruits available to wildlife and limits natural seed regeneration. Sustainable management should retain sufficient plants and fruits for reproduction.

Cape Jasmine provides medicinal resources while participating in ecological interactions among flowering plants, insects, and fruit-eating animals. Maintaining natural flowering and fruiting supports these functions.
