Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogon Root Tuber) is a well-known medicinal herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), widely used for centuries for its ability to nourish Yin, generate body fluids, and relieve dryness. According to classical TCM theory, Mai Men Dong is sweet and slightly bitter in flavor, neutral with a tendency toward cold, and enters the Lung, Stomach, and Heart meridians, making it especially suitable for conditions related to Yin deficiency and depletion of fluids.
Clinically, Mai Men Dong is commonly prescribed to moisten the Lungs, relieve dry cough, soothe the throat, and alleviate thirst, particularly in cases of dry cough, Lung heat, chronic bronchitis, sore throat, or prolonged pulmonary dryness. Its ability to nourish the Stomach and promote fluid production also makes it useful for digestive discomfort, dry mouth, and constipation caused by Yin deficiency.
Modern pharmacological studies have identified a variety of active constituents in Mai Men Dong, including steroidal saponins (ophiopogonins), polysaccharides, amino acids, and phytosterols. These compounds contribute to its anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, cardioprotective, hepatoprotective, and lung-protective effects. Recent research has also explored its potential role in reducing oxidative stress, regulating immune responses, and supporting recovery from chronic fatigue or long-term overexertion.
Due to its Yin-nourishing and fluid-restoring properties, Mai Men Dong is often considered in conditions involving dryness, internal heat, or constitutional weakness, and has gained attention in supportive care for certain autoimmune-related dryness syndromes.
Despite its benefits, Mai Men Dong should not be used indiscriminately. Traditional guidelines advise caution in individuals with Spleen-Stomach deficiency and cold, diarrhea, heavy phlegm-dampness, or acute excess heat conditions. When used appropriately and in proper herbal combinations, Mai Men Dong remains a valuable and well-balanced herb in both traditional and integrative medicine.
Traditional Chinese Medicine holds that Mai Men Dong nourishes Yin and moistens dryness, clears the Heart and drains Fire, moistens the Lung and tonifies the Stomach, resolves Qi stagnation in the thoracic and abdominal cavities, promotes urination, benefits Essence, and strengthens Yin. It helps the body tolerate hypoxic conditions and therefore shows therapeutic effects in disorders of the heart, lungs, and brain.
Indicated for Qi stagnation in the chest and abdomen due to dry heat and depletion of body fluids, causing rebellious Stomach Qi, obstruction of the Stomach channel, and weakening of meridian Qi.
Tonifies the Stomach and generates fluids; suitable for conditions such as Yin damage caused by heat, Stomach heat, dry mouth and tongue, thirst, red tongue with scanty coating due to Yin and fluid depletion.
Because it moistens the intestines and facilitates bowel movement, it is suitable for intestinal dryness, dry constipation due to Yin deficiency, and treatment of dysentery.
Treats bleeding gums (decoct Mai Men Dong and use the liquid as a mouth rinse).
Clears Heart Fire and alleviates palpitations, tachycardia, arrhythmia, and a pounding sensation of the heart.
Treats atherosclerosis, protects against myocardial ischemia, and relieves coronary artery spasm.
Enhances myocardial contractile function.
Calms the spirit by clearing the Heart and relieving vexation; suitable for Heart Fire hyperactivity, insomnia, irritability, and mental restlessness.
Improves learning and memory and provides neuroprotective effects.
Treats cough with dyspnea, reduces cough caused by rebellious Qi, and treats dry and suppurative Lung conditions.
Due to its Yin-nourishing and Lung-moistening properties, it treats Lung heat and is suitable for cough with phlegm, dry cough, asthmatic cough, acute bronchitis, pharyngitis, sore throat, nasal dryness, hematemesis, hemoptysis, and epistaxis.
Treats difficulty in swallowing due to throat dryness.
Anti-pulmonary fibrosis: Recent studies indicate that Mai Men Dong may reduce fibroblast activation, oxidative stress, and inflammation, thereby alleviating bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis as well as radiation-induced pulmonary fibrosis.
Treats excessive thirst due to wasting-thirst disorder (diabetes) and lowers blood glucose.
Supports treatment of glomerulonephritis.
Improves physical weakness, emaciation, shortness of Qi, and generalized internal heat. Supports treatment of Sjögren’s syndrome (a typical autoimmune disorder causing dry eyes and dry mouth).
Helps treat disorders arising from prolonged overexertion that disrupt organ function, leading to debility, Qi and Blood deficiency, and Yin–Yang imbalance.
Helps replenish original Qi; long-term use strengthens the body, enhances agility, slows aging, and reduces hunger sensation.
Experimentally, Mai Men Dong exhibits significant anti-inflammatory effects in both acute and chronic stages. It has hepatoprotective effects and protects organs against oxidative and inflammatory injury.
It also shows immunomodulatory effects (reducing hypertrophy of the thymus gland) and supports treatment of autoimmune diseases.
Inhibits Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Shigella dysenteriae, and Bacillus subtilis.
Reviews and mechanistic studies indicate that certain saponins (such as ophiopogonin B/D/D’) and other active constituents may inhibit proliferation, induce apoptosis, and/or reduce metastasis in various cancer cell lines and animal models.
Provides radioprotective effects and reduces radiation-induced injury.
Promotes spermatogenesis and facilitates conception.
Supports muscle growth and weight gain.
Treats heat-induced edema with swelling of the face, nose, and joints of the hands and feet.
Improves complexion. Enhances skin hydration, reduces irritation, and supports the skin barrier.
8–30 grams per day, used in decoctions or in pill, powder, or paste forms.
Use with caution in patients with Spleen–Stomach deficiency and cold, or diarrhea.
Contraindicated in cases of excessive internal heat in the Lung and Stomach (exuberant pathogenic heat, acute inflammation, high fever, thick yellow phlegm, bitter taste in the mouth, constipation, abdominal fullness, dark-red tongue with thick yellow coating).
Contraindicated in cases of excessive internal Yin-cold with marked Yang deficiency (aversion to cold, cold limbs, clear and profuse urination, pale tongue with slippery white coating, deep and slow pulse).
Contraindicated in severe phlegm-dampness accumulation not yet transformed (heavy head and chest, copious thin white phlegm, chest oppression, swollen tongue with thick greasy white coating).
Not suitable in the early stage of external invasion by Wind-Cold or Wind-Heat before the pathogen enters the interior (fever, aversion to wind, headache, nasal congestion, newly onset cough, thin tongue coating).
Beyond its therapeutic value, Mondo Grass (Ophiopogon japonicus (Thunb.) Ker Gawl.) also provides several ecological benefits:
