ECOLOGICAL VALUE OF MORINDA OFFICINALIS

Beyond its therapeutic value, Morinda officinalis How has distinctive ecological characteristics associated with forest understory habitats, soil nutrients, and root-associated microorganisms:

  • Forest Understory Adaptation: As a perennial woody climber, it can grow beneath tree canopies. Research in Guangdong, China, reported higher medicinal root quality under understory cultivation than in certain open-field systems under the studied conditions.
  • Soil Nutrient Interactions: The accumulation of selected compounds in its roots is associated with soil phosphorus and potassium availability, demonstrating the importance of soil conditions for plant development.
  • Rhizosphere Microbial Relationships: Research in Vietnam identified beneficial microorganisms capable of suppressing Fusarium root rot. Appropriate microbial treatments reduced disease severity and improved growth under experimental conditions.
  • Habitat Conservation and Sustainable Harvesting: Root harvesting generally removes plants and disturbs soil. Well-managed cultivation under existing forest canopies, without forest clearance, may reduce pressure on wild populations.

Morinda officinalis provides medicinal value and ecological significance through understory habitat adaptation and plant–soil–microbe interactions. Understory cultivation combined with biological soil management offers potential for sustainable medicinal production.
