Contraindications and Precautions

Volatile Oil Toxicity: Due to strong central nervous system inhibition at high doses, overdose may cause deep sleep, respiratory depression, diminished reflexes, or even life-threatening reactions.

Contraindicated in the following conditions:

  • Liver–Kidney hyperactivity (“moving Qi” syndrome): Individuals prone to Qi reversal, irritability, palpitations, dizziness, or tremors, often due to Yin deficiency with internal heat — Bai Zhu may exacerbate hyperactivity of Yang.
  • Qi stagnation, fullness, and abdominal distension (excess type): Those with bloating, belching, poor digestion, chest oppression, or abdominal masses due to excess — the herb’s warm, drying, and ascending nature may aggravate stagnation.
  • Excess heat or Yin deficiency with internal fire: Manifestations: dry stool, thirst, dry mouth, flushed face, emaciation, internal heat.
Bai Zhu’s drying nature further depletes body fluids and worsens constipation and thirst.
  • Suppurative or purulent conditions (e.g., abscesses, ulcers, carbuncles): In heat-toxin or excess-heat patterns, Bai Zhu may obstruct pus discharge and delay healing.

Incompatibilities:
Should not be combined with peach (Prunus persica), rose apple (Syzygium jambos), or sparrow meat (Passer montanus)
